- Guofu is Frederick Bierman and James E. Spears Professor of Finance at Olin Business School,
Washington
University in St. Louis, where he joined in 1990 and has worked ever since.
Guofu Zhou (周国富) grew up in Chengdu, the capital of
Sichuan Province in the Southwestern China.
Chengdu has been a cultural center since at least 400 BC, as evidenced by the Jinsha Site Museum, which was built on the grounds of an ancient Kingdom dating back
to 2700 BC. The museum showcases remarkable treasures of gold, jade, bronze, stone, and ivory—artifacts that are truly “ancient.”
Widely regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in China, Chengdu offers breathtaking scenery, including places where one can still drink
fresh water directly from the Yangtze River, the longest river in the world. Here are some
Photos around Chengdu. .
One can visit the Blue Ox Palace, where Lao Tse, according to legend,
ascended to Heaven in 500 BC after completing his most famous and fundamental text in both philosophy and Taoism,
Tao Te Ching: The Way;
host a 10-person party on the toe of a gigantic Buddha statue overlooking
the confluence of three rivers; or climb a strenuous 40 mile stone
path in 3 days, though today a bus and a cable car can carry you up in about 3 hours, to the Golden Summit of
Mt. Emei (the highest of China's Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains), where one can reflect in awe while witnessing the mystical “Buddha’s halo,"
formed when sunlight refracts off clouds into a circle of shimmering, multi-colored radiance. One may also
seek the Way through meditation on
Mt. QingCheng (the #1 Taoism mount; just 1.25-hours' drive from Chengdu).
Within the city, one can marvel at the Chengdu Panda Base, the world’s only site where tourists can observe many wild pandas at close range;
stroll through the zigzagging corridors of Du Fu Park, named after China's greatest
realism poet (712-770 AD), who composed more than 200 poems amid its
flourishing ancient trees, plum groves, and lotus ponds; wander on Jinli Pedestrian Street, alive
with cultural performances, crafts, cuisine and teahouses; or see authentic relics and stone figures from the famous "Three Kingdoms" period
at the Wuhou Memorial Temple. Finally, one must not miss the chance to
recharge oneself immensely with Chengdu’s renowned spicy Sichuan cuisine, such as
hot pots and small dishes (a set of 20 or more different kinds
is not uncommon for a single person!)
